About O le Upu

Our mission

Many Samoan families now live far from the village, the church choir and the elders who once passed the language on around the evening lotu. O le Upu exists to keep that thread unbroken: every day we publish one verse from O le Tusi Paia, the Samoan Bible, with a faithful English translation beside it, a reflection written in both languages, and one Samoan word studied in depth.

The goal is simple. A reader with no Samoan at all should be able to follow the meaning, and a reader who grew up with the language should find something worth pausing over.

How our content is made

Scripture text is drawn from the Samoan Bible. Reflections and word studies are drafted with editorial assistance and then reviewed against the biblical text before publication. Every vocabulary entry lists the passages where the word appears, so readers can check the usage themselves rather than take our word for it.

We restrict ourselves deliberately: all verses, reflections, etymologies and cross-references come from the Bible itself. We do not draw on hymnbooks or other devotional collections, so that the language you learn here is the language of the scripture you are reading.

• Samoan and English are presented side by side, never one hidden behind the other.
• Corrections are welcome and made promptly — write to us via the contact page.
• O le Upu is independent and not affiliated with any denomination, congregation or government body.
• Advertising is clearly labelled and never presented as devotional or editorial content.
